Trail reopened after bear scare

Posted: Wednesday, April 12, 2000

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Chugach State Park rangers have reopened the Turnagain Arm Trail south of Anchorage.

About half of the nine-mile trail -- between Potter Creek and McHugh Creek -- was closed March 31 because of a brown bear in the area. The bear had been feeding on the carcass of a large bull moose less than 50 feet from the trail.

By last weekend, the carcass was ''down to a couple of bones with little meat,'' said park superintendent Al Meiners.

''There's been no recent sign of the bear,'' he said.
