Best Bets

The 12th annual Kenai Peninsula Borough School District all-borough art show, "A Visual Feast," will run through April 25 at the Kenai Fine Arts Center, 816 Cook Ave. in Kenai. The exhibit includes pieces from students in grades six through 12.

The annual Kenai Peninsula College Student Art Show will run through May 1. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. The show features various art media of students attending KPC.

Events and Exhibits

The musical "Annie Get Your Gun" will be presented April 19, 20, 21 and 22 at Soldotna High School Auditorium. All shows begin at 7 p.m. except the Sunday performance, which is at 3 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in Kenai at Charlotte's, the Merit Inn, Malston's and Halcyon Spalon, and in Soldotna at River City Books, Sweeney's and The Music Box.

The Kenai Chamber of Commerce and the Kenai Convention and Visitors Bureau present "Beneath the Surface: Images of Katmai," a solo photography exhibit by Gary Freeburg, through Saturday at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center.

Kaladi Brothers will feature artwork by Kenai Peninsula Borough School District art teachers during April.

There will be a Pfaff Club meeting Saturday and a weekend travel bag class Monday at the J and H Sewing and Vacuum Center, 222 N. Binkley in Soldotna. For more information, call 262-6363.

Lasting Stitches will host Sew Saturday at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Old Town Village Restaurant in Kenai.

The eighth annual Cook Inlet Lions Kenai Peninsula Cribbage Tournament will be held Sunday at the Nikiski Senior Center at 3 p.m. The tournament takes place each Sunday through May 6. For more information, call Bob Harrison at 776-5339.

Alaskan Gift and Gallery in Kenai has a display of clocks made by area artisans Russell Burnett, Mike Efta, Tom Wagoner, Al Janonis, George Callison, Harvey Douthit, Ray Wright and Alvin Pierce. Also, Jim Evenson's newest lithograph, "Wilderness Experience," has just been released and is on display.

Northcountry Fair in Soldotna offers pottery by Libby Berezin; silver jewelry by Judie Gumm; aluminum clocks by Andy Kirsch; painted ceramics by Jeannie Shirk; ceramic fish drawer pulls by Shawnee Kinney; and switch plate covers by Judy Winn.

Birch Tree Gallery offers watercolors by Alaska artists Jean Shadrach and Mary Ann Dunham; wearable art items by Lila Krohn, Vivian McCain and Kathleen Logan; bead-weaving broaches and barrettes by Laurine Maxwell-Evens; silver and gold jewelry by Tami Marsters; baskets by Pat Morrison; fur-trimmed slippers by Stephanie Carroll; pottery by Libby Berezin and Peggy Thompson; and stained glass by Joyce Getchell, Rob Jolly and Lisa Carlon.

Claudette's Folk Art and Collectables in Soldotna features works from area artisans, including Stephanie Wortham's Alaska folk art furniture and wooden decorations, Dorthy Bush's birch bark baskets, Star McCloud's whimsical folk art characters, Loni Galloway's stained glass, Claudette Barber's fabric pieces and Kris Wisher's antique fork shelves and old door knob coat racks.

Malfunction Junction Gifts at the "Y" in Soldotna offers handcrafted originals by area artists, including fur hats, gloves and slippers by Lee Martin; fused and slumped glass window art, lamps and "hippie candles" by Jana Coffey; carved masks and "spirit dancers" by David Hendron; sea grass baskets by Pat Morrison; pottery by Laura Faeo; and salmon rod holders by Bob Condon.

The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center displays ethnographic material from the Athabaskan, Yupik Eskimo and Aleut cultures. Admission is free. For more information, call 283-1991.

Old Town Village Restaurant features historic pictures of the early days in Kenai.

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Information Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are many scenic hiking trails, including the Kenai River trail, which begins near the center. The center is on Ski Hill Road near the intersection of the Sterling Highway and Funny River Road in Soldotna. For more information, call 262-7021.

The Hunger Hut in Nikiski presents music by Supes Blues Band at 9 p.m. Friday.

The Vagabond Inn presents blues and classic rock tunes by The Baked Alaskans Band at 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Kaladi Brothers presents music by Mike Morgan at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Millie's Moose River Inn in Sterling presents music by Gypsy and the Big Spanker at 9 p.m. Saturday and a special adult Easter egg hunt at noon on Sunday. For more information, call 260-4933.

BJ's Lounge will present music by Butch Leman Friday at 9 p.m.

George's Casino has a DJ playing Top 40 music every Tuesday through Saturday at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday live music.

The Rainbow Bar in Kenai presents music by the Maybrey Brothers every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m.

J-Bar-B, 6 miles south of Soldotna, presents karaoke by the Mic Hoggers on Friday nights.

The Katmai presents live music by Mark the Danglin' Wrangler on Friday and Saturday nights at 9.

The Riverside House presents "After 10," a dance party, Friday and Saturday nights. DJ Ian will play favorite Top 40 dance music until 5 a.m.

In the Future

The Performing Arts Society will present Scott Deal from the University of Alaska performing an evening of electronic percussion music at 7:30 p.m. April 21 in the Brockel Building of Kenai Peninsula College. Tickets are $15 and available at Northcountry Fair and River City Books in Soldotna and Alaskan Gift and Gallery in Kenai.

The Kenai River Folk Dancers will hold a community contra dance at 7 p.m. April 21 at Kalifornsky Beach Elementary School. There will be homemade goodies in a nonalcohol, smoke-free environment. Cost is $5; those 16 and under are free with an adult. For more information, call 283-9227.

The annual Kenai Peninsula College Sunday Showcase Celebration of the Arts will feature a student art show in the KPC gallery, wildlife art prints by Boyd Shaffer and the recreation of an old-time radio show by the Kenai Peninsula College Community Chorus. The free show will be at 3 p.m. April 22 in the Brockel Building with a reception following the celebration.

The Kenai Performers will present "You Can't Take it With You," April 27, 28, 29, May 4, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13 at the Old Town Village Restaurant in Kenai. To reserve tickets, call 283-4515.

The Kenai Convention and Visitors Bureau and Kenai Peninsula College will present "2001: A Fish Odyssey," starting May 1 at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center.

"Rarefied Light," an exhibition of photography, will be on display at the Pratt Museum through Sunday.

Ptarmigan Art Back Room Gallery presents "Masque of the Selke," collage photos by Stephanie Alton. The exhibit runs through May 2.

"Dedicated to the Cooks," by Marjorie Scholl, acrylic on canvas that celebrates the art of cooking, is on display at the William Henry Gallery through May 3.

The Bunnell Street Gallery presents the exhibit "Memento," by Paula Dickey, through May 3.

The Picture Alaska Gallery is showing "Embellished Watercolor Marbling," by Sue Zajac, through May 3.

The Pratt Museum will present a solo exhibition by Ron Senungetuk titled, "Isami," beginning April 20 with an opening reception at 5 p.m., followed by a slide presentation at 6.

The Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society will present "2001: An Art Odyssey," May 4 through June 6 with an opening reception May 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the William Henry Gallery.

Anchorage Events

The Anchorage Concert Association will present fiddler Mark O'Connor April 22 at 4 p.m. at the Evangeline Concert Hall. For tickets, call (800) GRT-SEAT.

The Anchorage Opera will present the award-winning play "Master Class" April 19-29 at the Sydney Lawrence Theatre at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $20. For more information, call (907) 263-ARTS.

The Anchorage Concert Association will present the Broadway musical "Chicago" May 9-13 at the Evangeline Atwood Concert Hall.
