Mayor's decision gets reader's backing

Posted: Tuesday, April 12, 2005

I wish to applaud Soldotna Mayor Dave Carey and the Soldotna City Council for their pursuit of regulatory guidelines restricting the locations of so-called "adult businesses."

These sexually oriented businesses have no positive contribution to the quality of life our communities have to offer. Without regulation, these businesses can locate practically anywhere, near schools, churches, hospitals and neighborhoods. The kinds of behaviors these businesses encourage with "private viewing rooms" and graphic sexual materials degrade public decency and add additional burden to local police forces.

The owners of the inquiring business are not local, they are not even in the United States. They have no concern about the kinds of problems local residents will experience with their offerings, they are only interested in making money.

I applaud Mayor Carey for his leadership in pursuing prudent regulation to limit and restrict such businesses now and in the future. I also encourage like-minded residents to weigh in with their signature supporting regulation by signing the many petitions that are being circulated encouraging the Soldotna City Council to adopt these proposed regulations.
