Boyle fundraisers continue

The following fundraisers are planned by school employees and students to help defray the cost of cancer treatment for Gabe Boyle, a fourth-grader at Mountain View Elementary.

Gabe was diagnosed with AML (leukemia) and is undergoing treatment in Seattle Children’s Hospital for six to nine months.

· Ongoing — Gabe bracelets. Orange bracelets with Gabe’s name written on them. They are available at the following schools: Mountain View Elementary, Kenai Middle, Nikiski Middle-High and Sears. The cost is $1. each.

· Mountain View Elementary — The school will host the following sales: Mondays, popcorn and PowerAde; and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays: cookies and cupcakes. All items are sold at lunch time. The cost will be $.50;

· I’m Lovin Gabe Day — The school in conjunction with Dena and Scott Cunningham, owners of Kenai McDonald’s, will host “I’m Lovin Gabe” Day April 25. The Cunninghams will donate 10 percent of the total days’ sales to Gabe’s family to help cover expenses while he goes through his treatment in Seattle. Also the schools staff will serve from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. and during those hours special support Gabe items will be sold for $1 each;

· Monetary donations may be made at First National Bank to the Friends of Gabe Boyle account No. 30513667.

District forensics results announced

Mrs. Burns’s physical education classes have been running in school and at home to accumulate enough miles to run from Kenai to Soldotna. The fourth- through eighth-graders have logged enough miles to get around the loop from Kenai to Soldotna and back. The following students have completed their cumulative 22-mile run: John David Ahlberg, Lydia Chadwick, Freya Chay and Savannah Jensen.

Mr. Severson’s fourth-graders will host Business Day in the gym Thursday.

There is no school Friday as this is an inservice day.

The 2006-07 lottery results will be posted at the school after Monday.

Connections Home school

The staff would like to thank parents for having their students at last week’s testing.

Grades seven through 12 can sign up for the Alaska Coastal Ecology Field Trip with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. is May 12. Cook Inlet Academy

The school would like to thank Tony Gasbarro for speaking with the high school students about his work in El Salvador with the Peace Corps.

Yearbooks are for sale for $25. After Thursday the price is $35.

The CEF Party Club meets at 3 p.m. Thursday in Ms. Becky’s room. It will be an Easter party and is open to the public.

The track teams open its season this week with meets in Kenai. The junior high team competes Thursday and the senior high team competes Friday.

There is no school Friday in observance of Good Friday.

The school board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the library. This year’s board members are Greg Bell, Doug Brown, Mark Cialek, Karen McGahan, Dan Michel, Paul Minelga, Dianna Taplin, and Karrie Yarnes. The parents and staff would like to thank the board members for their expertise, hard work and dedication.

IDEA

The staff would like to thank the parents and kids who attended statewide testing last week. The school had 98 percent turnout. The Department of Education reports that test results should be back by Mid-June. Thank you also to the proctors and the volunteers at testing who made the testing environment safe and quiet.

The staff would also like to thank Tami for filling in as media specialist during Janice’s absence and to Islands and Oceans Center, The Pratt Museum, The Center for Coastal Studies, Lake Clark National Park and the Kachemak Bay Research Reserve for putting together the morning of coastal science last Friday.

Parent inservice day will be held April 25 at Solid Rock Bible Camp. Details will be forthcoming.

Kaleidoscope School of Arts and Science

Mrs. Shelden’s and Mrs. Stroh’s classes will walk to the creek today. The remaining balance for the fjord trip can be paid at anytime, it is due by May 1.

Classes are incubating chicken and duck eggs. Your child can keep you informed on their progress, along with how the salmon eggs are doing.

There will be no school Friday for students. It is an inservice day for the staff.

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary

Kindergarten registration will be held Thursday afternoon. Call the school at 262-1463 to set a time for your student.

The Girls’ Science Club will host a science festival for students and parents from 2:40 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Students may attend if they have a signed permission slip from their parents. Activities will focus on problem solving and using the scientific inquiry process skills.

In Mrs. McBee’s class students are getting ready to incubate duck eggs. They also will study time and build water clocks, investigate how pendulums work and learning about navigation.

The first grade has been learning about games, including charades, relay races and rhyming games. Students will turn their original games in Monday. They also have started incubate eggs, with an expected hatching date later this month.

The close-up group returns from Washington D.C. on Sunday.

Kenai Montessori

This month the students are studying Europe.

Miss Bouchard and the afternoon studio arts students are working on their costumes and sets for the annual spring performance coming up in May.

The used children’s book drive has collected more than 600 books that will be shipped to schools and child care centers in the rural areas of Alaska. Anyone wishing to donate used children’s books can drop them off in the school lobby.

Student applications for the summer Explorers Program and, or the 2006-07 school year are being accepted.

Kenaitze Cuya Qyutanen Head Start

The Bears and Moose classes would like to thank the volunteers for helping with the last swim trip of the school year. There will be an Easter celebration Friday. Classes will be open for Easter activities.

The Eagle and Raven classes are learning to sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” in English and in the Dena’ina language. The children painted stars, sorted shells in the sand and made slime snakes.

The Whale and Salmon classes celebrated Silly Sock Day on Friday. Parents are reminded to remove your child’s wet snow gear from their backpacks after school to allow them to dry for the next day. Mud boots are requested.

Nikiski Middle-High School

Sarah Herrin was chosen as 3A Girls Basketball Player of the Year; Coach Ward Romans was chosen as the 3A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year.

Debbie Falk was honored at the April 3 board meeting as a recipient of the districts Golden Apple Award. Faulk was nominated for her ‘countless dedicated hours that are crucial to the school operation and success. Debbie has the unique quality of being a natural at networking. She is a common thread that connects the everyone within the school. Mrs. Falk is a true student advocate.’

Redoubt Elementary

Fun Fest will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Permission slips must be turned in by Thursday morning. Parents are reminded to pick up students at their classrooms at 5:30 p.m.

Kindergartners start school at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The late start is to accommodate a visit from new kindergartners.

Kindergarten visitation for students beginning kindergarten this fall is from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Thursday. Kindergartners will visit classrooms while parents attend a meeting in the library. Parents with incoming kindergartners are asked to register their child this spring if they haven’t already done so.

Site Council meets at 3:45 p.m. today in the conference room. Meetings are open to the public.

Preregistration forms will be sent home this week. Parents are asked to complete and return the form right away. The school must receive this form in order to place students on a class list for fall.

School pictures were sent home last week. Parents are asked to pay for photos they keep and return any remaining photos to school by Thursday. There is no obligation to buy any photos. The entire photo packet may be returned.

Sears Elementary

Kindergarten orientation for parents has changed. Orientation will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 25.

In science, Ms. Ralston’s students learned about the different characteristics of mammals, birds, and amphibians. In math the students worked on telling time to the hour, half hour, and quarter hour. The students also explored the different combinations of numbers from 1 to 20. Parents are reminded to turn in your child’s permission slip for the Anchorage Zoo trip as soon as possible.

There will be no school for students Friday as it is an inservice day for teachers.

On April 20, Mrs. Bryson’s kindergarten will have a dinosaur program at 6:30 p.m. in the library, and Mrs. Atchley’s first grade class will have its poetry night at 6 p.m. in the classroom.

Soldotna High School

Congratulations to the following students who placed at the state CTSO/ SkillsUSA Conference in Anchorage March 30, 31 and April 1: Uriah Baalke, second place in technical drafting; Jesse Carlson, first place in beginning technical drafting; Aaron Gordon, first place in TV and video production (team of two); Marit Hartvigson, third place in technical drafting; Emma Miles, second place in TV and video production (team of two); Allyson Oberts, second place in TV and video production (team of two); Samuel Peter Jr, first place in TV and video production (team of two); Sasha Porter, tied for first place in food and beverage service.

Freshmen completed a semi annual Adult CPR class offered by the PE department. Seventy-seven freshmen participated in this American Red Cross sponsored class to receive a CPR card. Sixty-six of the participants met the requirements to be certified, a success rate of 86 percent This class is offered as part of the swimming, Basic water safety during physical education classes.

The proms theme is A Red Carpet Affair, a tribute to classic Hollywood. Tickets are $25 for singles and $50 for couples. The prom will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight April 22 . Appropriate dress is required. Guests who do not attend SoHi must be under 21 and must be signed up in advance.

Soldotna Elementary

The band concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the school.

Congratulations to future problem solver Brooke Hughes who placed first in the Junior Division. Her scenario has gone on to compete at the international level.

The future problem solving team has been invited to compete at the state level. Congratulations to Hannah Cristiano, Bree Mucha, Brooke Highes and Tayllor VonHeeder for the writing, reading, problem solving and research.

Thank you to Ryker King for his caring and kindness. He was named Honor Buck winner for his efforts.

Thank you to parents for the extra help during Assessment Week. Students were present and on time and the snacks sent were nutritious.

Soldotna Middle

Counselor, Mrs. Dougherty, will visit the five elementary feeder schools to hand-out scheduling packets to incoming seventh-graders April 19 through 21.

Special thanks to Mr. Kircher and Mrs. Litzenberger for organizing snacks and pretest warmups for the Standards Based Assessment Tests. Also, thanks to the staff for a job well done. Tests were well attended and the parents did a great job of getting their students to school

The PTSA will meet at 5:30 p.m. April 20 in the library.

Soldotna Montessori Charter

The annual bean soup project will be held Thursday at the Borough Building. Volunteers are needed to supervise the students while they measure, assemble and mark the bean soup kits. If you can volunteer, call the office or your child’s teacher. The kits will benefit the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank.

Mrs. Romatz’s class is accepting garage sale donations. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21 and 22 at 320 W. Riverview in Soldotna. Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund the Otter Cove field study. Donations may be brought to Mrs. Romatz or call her to pick them up.

The academic policy committee needs three new members to fill the vacancies of retiring members who have served their two-year term. Parents of a student enrolled during the 2005-06 school year may apply. Applications and information are available in the school office. Applications must be returned to the office by April 26.

On Tuesday, Mrs. Romatz’s fourth-through sixth-graders held their Invention Convention. Students shared their inventions with family and friends.

Sterling Elementary

Today from 4 to 5 p.m. in the conference room there will be a planning meeting for the schools Family Fun Day. The fun day will be held April 22 to coincide with Earth Day.

The kindergarten through third grade spring musical will be held Tuesday. There will be two performances. The first will be at 2:01 p.m. and the second will be at 6:31 p.m. Students should arrive at school at 6:10 p.m. to prepare for the evening performance.

On April 20, Soldotna Middle School staff will visit with the sixth grade students about course options for next year.

Prekindergartners may visit the kindergarten room from 10 to 11 a.m. April 20. Kindergarten registration will begin Monday.

Congratulations to Bud Sparks who was selected as the Masonic Outstanding Student for the school. Other nominees were Katie Clonan, Jacob Douthit, Maranda Merkes and Lacey Moore. Bud will be recognized along with the Masonic Outstanding Students from other schools at a special ceremony held at Kenai Central High School.

Sterling RurAL CAP Head Start

The children are learning about zoo animals this week. The a.m. children watched a video on the Alaska Zoo and made lion masks. The children built cages for the zoo animals and played “Zoo Keeper.”

The p.m. class had puppet shows and made zoo animal puppets. Next week the children will learn about farm animals.

The school is accepting applications for the fall. Class sizes are limited. Families will need income verification, immunization records and documentation of TB test and results in order process the application. All families are may apply regardless of income.

Tustumena Elementary

District art specialist, Debbie Harris will be at the school this week providing preselected lessons for classrooms.

The PTO will meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the multi-purpose room. The topic will be election of officers for 2006-07. Parents wishing to serve as officers may call Sheila Garrant at 262-2133.

The spring music program is scheduled at 2:30 p.m. April 19. The program will feature kindergarten through third grade classes and beginning and second-year bands. Parents are invited to attend.

The Service High School Orchestra from Anchorage will visit at 1:30 p.m. April 25. Parents are welcome to attend.

Wings Christian Academy

Matanya Bush won the cleanest desk of the week award.

The clue for the mystery person contest is: “My culinary skills changed the french fry.”

The kindergartners have started learning about seeds, subtracting, and how to count money.

The first-graders are learning about why they should pray for our leaders and continue to improve in math.

Alexander Pettey won multiplication bingo this month.

Stanford testing will be held this week. Parents are reminded to have students well rested and have breakfast in the morning.

There will be a garage sale Saturday. The proceeds will help students reach their goal of attending the International Student Convention. Donations are needed.

There is no school Monday in celebration of Easter.
