FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A 35-year-old Fairbanks man has been convicted of sexually abusing his step-daughter over a seven-year period.

A jury in Fairbanks Superior Court found James Emery guilty Tuesday on seven counts after less than a day of deliberations.

Five of the guilty verdicts were for first-degree sexual abuse of a minor and the other two were for second-degree sexual abuse.

The abuse of the young girl started in 1992 and continued until last year. She is now 16 years old.

The girl reportedly told family members about the abuse in 1993, but it wasn't reported to police until late last year.

The jury quickly rejected Emery's defense that the sexual abuse charges were thought up by his estranged wife to gain an upper hand in a child-custody fight.
