Longtime Alaska resident Melvern Newby died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at his home in Pahrump, Nev. He was 76.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the American Legion in Kenai.
Mr. Newby was born March 6, 1927, in Plover, Wis. He moved to the Matanuska Valley in 1942, where he farmed until 1968, when he moved to the Kenai Peninsula. Between 1987 and his death, he divided his time between Nevada and Alaska.
He worked in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose and American Legion clubs.
Mr. Newby was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and daughter, Linda Laflamme.
He is survived by his mother, Nada Newby of Palmer; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Cindy Newby of Soldotna; daughter, Norma Kinney of Kenai; brother, Conrad Newby of California; sister, Patsy McAllister of Palmer; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were made by Neptune Services in Nevada.
