Posted: Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Motorists are reminded that studded tires must be removed by Friday from vehicles driven south of 60 north latitude, a line that runs just north of Happy Valley and south of Seward on the Kenai Peninsula.

The date is May 1 for vehicles north of the line.

Alaska law states it is unlawful to operate a motor vehicle with studded tires or chains attached on a paved highway or road from May 1 through Sept. 15, inclusive, north of 60 north latitude, and from April 15 through Sept. 30, inclusive, south of 60 north latitude.

An exception is that at any latitude on a paved portion of the Sterling Highway, a person may not operate a motor vehicle with studded tires or chains from May 1 through Sept. 15.
