FAIRBANKS (AP) A Fairbanks man remained in critical condition following a car crash last week in a Seattle suburb.

Robert Merdes, 47, was being treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The car crash occurred Thursday in Woodinville, leaving Merdes and another man with severe burns. The other man was identified as James Fleetwood, 46 of Kirkland, Wash.

Fleetwood was driving a late-model Chevrolet Corvette when he lost control of the car and struck a concrete column beneath an overpass. Merdes was a passenger in the car, which burst into flames on impact.

Witnesses pulled the men out of the car.

Merdes works for Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. as the manager of Pump Station 7.
