The following is a list of Soldotna Community Schools classes and activities starting this week. It is printed as a reminder to preregistered participants. Anyone who is interested in a class but not preregistered should call Soldotna Community Schools at 262-6768.

Introduction to Sweep Rowing with Donna Rea Kenai Crewsers members will present information about the sport of sweep rowing and sculling for recreation, fitness and competition. Participants will learn about equipment, training, safety, clothing and area rowing opportunities. No prior experience is needed. The class is open to anyone age 12 and up. For more information, call 262-6037 or 260-OARS. The class will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Soldotna Middle School library. It is free.

Spring Floral Arranging with Basket with Carroll Knutson, master florist Learn the simple mechanics professional floral designers use to make beautiful basket arrangements. Participants should bring a 6-inch basket with a handle, a small knife and a floral bundle. The class is open to adults with an eight-person minimum and 12-person maximum. It meets from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday in the Soldotna Middle School home economics room. The cost is $25 and includes some materials.

Pop-Up Cards with Bonnie Veatch-Bates of Bonnie's Why Not Shop Participants will learn to make three types of pop-up cards. The class is open to anyone age 16 and older. There is a three-person minimum and 15-person maximum. The class will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Soldotna Middle School home economics room. The cost is $20.

The following is a list of upcoming classes offered through Homer Community Schools. For more information, call (907) 235-6090.

Baby Sign Language with specialist Ilaine Carpenter Participants will learn about the benefits of communicating with preverbal babies through sign language. The class will cover signs and techniques necessary to communicate with preverbal infants. Benefits include less frustration, larger vocabularies and earlier speech development. The workshop meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 24. The cost is $20 for the first parent and $10 for an additional parents and includes all materials.

Registration still is available for the following classes: Marine Weather; Fish and Game Sport Fishing Regulations; Basic Pruning Techniques and Training Young Trees; and Life in the Balance: Prioritize to Face Life's Challenges.

There will be a meeting at 7 p.m. April 22 at Homer City Hall for anyone interested in getting the Tree Steward program going again.

Volunteers are needed to help with two upcoming events. The bike rodeo will be from 10 a.m. to noon April 26, and the Hershey's Track and Field Meet will be from 1 to 4 p.m. May 17. To volunteer, call Homer Community Schools at (907) 235-6090.
