ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Residents of the southern Kenai Peninsula can expect an early fire season because conditions are unusually dry for this time of year, state fire officials say.
The declaration by the state Division of Forestry means state permits are required for open burning starting on April 23 on land south of Diamond Ridge, Skyline and Hutler roads, including the McNeil Canyon drainage.
Fire season for the rest of the peninsula and the Mat-Su Valley will begin as usual on May 1.
