Two Gambell brothers die when snowmachine runs out of gas

Posted: Monday, April 15, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Two brothers from the village of Gambell on St. Lawrence Island were found dead Saturday night on a mountainside about a mile and a half from the village.

Troopers believe the men, Stanley and Silas Aningayou, ages 47 and 42, had been trying to visit their parents' graves at the cemetery when they ran out of gas and froze to death next to their snowmachine. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor, troopers said.

Investigators said the brothers were last seen at about 9 p.m. Thursday and were not reported missing until 10:40 a.m. Saturday.

A search party was sent out from Gambell, and the bodies were found around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The bodies were released to the family by the state medical examiner.
