Former Kenai resident Charles R. Childers died Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at the veteran's hospital in Tucson, Ariz., of a massive stroke. He was 72.
His ashes will be returned to Alaska for burial and a memorial service will then be conducted by Father Richard Tero.
Born Feb. 26, 1930, in Lamesa, Texas, Mr. Childers lived in Alaska from 1967 until 1999, when he moved to Tucson.
"Charles suffered much from many physical disabilities all his life. He was always loving, generous and caring to all his family and friends, and he never met a stranger," his family said.
"Upon the death of his father, at a young age, Charles always took care of his mother, Dollie, until her death in January 1998."
Mr. Childers was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Dollie Childers, and brothers, John, Preston and Darvin.
He is survived by his sister, Shirley Tichenor of Tucson; nephew, Bill Childers of Kenai; nieces, Teresa Honrud of Kenai and Lorri Childers of Waco, Texas; former sister-in-law, Nita Young of Kenai; and numerous relatives throughout the Lower 48.
