Accident closes highway

Posted: Tuesday, April 16, 2002

A single-vehicle traffic accident Monday afternoon critically injured one man, closed the Kenai Spur Highway and shut off power in the Nikiski area.

It began when a flatbed semi truck tipped over at the intersection of North Miller Road and the Spur Highway, then collided with a gas house.

The Nikiski Fire Department initially responded and rescued the truck driver from the semi. The driver, whose identity had not been released Monday afternoon, was transported to Central Peninsula General Hospital with critical head injuries.

Debris from the accident and fear of a gas leak led officials to close the highway.

Alaska State Troopers, Enstar and the Homer Electrical Association were called in to help contain the incident.

According to early reports, gas workers were trying to pinch off the gas line, and HEA was shutting off electricity to an overhead power line, so a crane could remove the semi from the scene.

No other details were available at press time.
