Outfielder David Newby has agreed to return for a third season with the Oilers. Prior to joining the Oilers in 2004 Newby played for the American Legion Twins and starred in several sports at Soldotna High School. David now attends Division I University of Texas at Arlington and to date has appeared in sixteen games. Newby has been slowed due to injuries but is expected to make a complete recovery in time for the Oilers’ 2006 season.

David’s parents are Tammy and Jim Newby of Soldotna. Twin brother Eric (2004) and older brother Joey (2001, 2002) also are members of the Oilers alumni club. Joey is currently pitching in the Oakland A’s organization. Newby’s cousin Justin played four years in the Kansas City Royals organization. David is majoring in communications.

The Oilers have strengthened their 2006 pitching staff with the addition of Riverside Community College freshman right-hander Tyler Topp. Topp has appeared in 10 games to date and sports an earned run average of 1.88. Oilers head coach Thad Johnson is the Tigers pitching coach.
