Longtime Alaskan and Sterling resident Donald R. Smith died Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at home surrounded by his family. He was 78.
A private family burial will take place at Angelus Memorial Park in Anchorage.
Mr. Smith was born Jan. 14, 1932 in Portland, Ore. He moved to Alaska in 1970 and resided in Fairbanks. He moved to Anchorage in 1975 and owned and operated Anchorage Opticians. He also worked Visions Plastics Wholesale and at Sears Optical. He retired in 1998 from the optical business. He served on the State Optical Board for many years. Mr. Smith was Catholic. He also loved the outdoors and 'motorhoming' in Alaska, especially in Seward.
"Don loved spending time with family and was always a gracious host at events. He looked forward to finally being with his wife, Alice, who died in 1983," his family said.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Jennifer Smith of Sterling, and Ben and Faye Smith of Homer; daughter, Kathern Smith of Vancouver, BC; grandchildren, Cary Spohn of Moose Creek, Bryant Smith of Port Townsend, Wash., Anna Seavey of Kenai, Rhema Smith of Homer and Kasey Smith of Vancouver, BC; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Smith, Brandon Spohn and Heather Spohn of Moose Creek, Rebecca Boggs of Anchorage, Ahwrey Smith of Port Townsend, Wash.
Arrangements were by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
