The month of March was Literacy Awareness Month. The Peninsula Clarion along with our "Celebrate Learning" partners held an essay contest. The topic was "What Literacy Means to Me."
The contest was open to anyone residing on the Kernai Peninsula with a deadline of march 31, 2000. All essays were not to exceed 300 words; to be writtten in english; printed or typed and limited to one entry per contestant.
The judges were the Literacy Volunteers of America instructors at the Learning Center located on the Kenai Peninsula College campus.
Entrants were placed into 5 age groups, 5-12, 13-19, 20-30, 31-45, 46 and up. the contest winner in each age group received one $100 Savings bond.
The winner in the 5-12 age group was Alee M. Rowley. Sascha R. Pearce was the winner in the 13-19 age group. The best essay in the 20-30 age grup was Michele Fahnholz. Dennis H. Fuchs' essay won in the 31-45 age group and best essay in the 46 and over group was Barbara Waters.
