JUNEAU (AP) -- A Juneau man has been arrested on a charge of sexual assault in connection with a weekend attack that left a woman hospitalized.

Donald W. Seaman, 46, is being held at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

The victim of the alleged attack remained in the critical care unit at Bartlett Regional Hospital Monday. Investigators were waiting until the 43-year-old woman is released from the critical care unit before interviewing her about the assault. Seaman could face additional charges, said Capt. Tom Porter.

The woman told police Seaman kept her in an unoccupied residence downtown Saturday night and assaulted her most of the night. At 6 a.m. she woke up a downtown resident, who called the police.

''She just went and found the closest person that she could locate that would notify authorities for her,'' Porter said.

Seaman, who had recently moved to Juneau from New York, was not a complete stranger to the woman, who knew him by name, police said.

The assault was unusual in its brutality said Annette Coggins, executive director at the AWARE shelter. Most sexual assaults and rapes in Juneau don't involve additional physical violence, she said.
