Concealed carry bill headed to governor

JUNEAU (AP) -- A bill that would let people with permits to carry concealed weapons in other states also carry their guns in Alaska is headed to Gov. Tony Knowles' desk.

The Senate on Tuesday agreed with a change the House made Monday to Senate Bill 242, so the bill does not need to go to a conference committee.

The House amended the bill to clarify that Alaskans who don't qualify for a concealed-carry permit here may not go to another state, get a permit, then use it to carry concealed firearms in Alaska.

Knowles must now decide whether to sign the bill, veto it or allow it to become law without his signature. Knowles spokesman Bob King has said the governor has serious concerns about the bill, but would not say whether he would veto it.
