The Panthers reeled off 15 individual championships and three relay titles against Soldotna, Cook Inlet, Nikiski and Ninilchik in a minipreview of the Skyview Invitational, which is Friday and Saturday at Skyview.

Thit Bak swept the jumping events in the girls competition, Alex Rodriguez took both throwing events on the boys side and Albert White won the 100- and 200-meter dashes while running legs on two winning relays.

"Just need to keep working hard in practice and showing it in the meets," White said of the success.

Although some of Skyview's top athletes didn't compete, many of those who did performed well. White won the 100 in 11.74 seconds and the 200 in 23.94, 1 second faster than SoHi's Colton Schneider.

The junior also helped the 100- and 200-relay teams to winning times of 49.29 and 1:41.29, respectively.

Meanwhile, Bak, a foreign exchange student from Denmark, was impressive in the jumping events. The basketball and volleyball player won the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 2 inches. Her 5--2 mark in the high jump was good for gold, as was her leap of 14--11 in the long jump.

Bak hadn't competed in the triple jump or long jump before Friday.

"It was pretty good. I'm happy," she said. "I did the best I could."

Added coach Rob Sparks: "Not bad for your first time of the year."

Rodriguez, who also wrestles, edged Cook Inlet's Zac Taplin in the throwing events. In the discus, Rodriguez won with a toss of 106--2 to Taplin's 99--1 1/2. In the shot put, he marked a distance of 42--5 to Taplin's 38--2 1/2.

Taplin's results were promising for Cook Inlet, which features six athletes this season.

"We're just working on developing and progressing every meet and trying to get some personal bests and get some experience under our belt," coach Shawn Taplin said.

Other Skyview winners included Kyle Shedd (high jump), Cody Williams (800), Bud Sparks (triple jump and 300 hurdles), Marissa Mahan (shot put), Elisha Hollers (100 hurdles), Sydney Roumagoux (100) and Brayden Holt (1,600 and 3,200).

Cook Inlet got a first-place finish out of Cara Davidson in the discus (93--8). SoHi's Schneider won three events -- the 400, long jump and high jump, which he shared with Shedd.

Also winning individual events for the Stars were Tyler Barkman (110 hurdles), Bree Mucha (400), Mariah Ulen (300 hurdles), Kaillee Skjold (800), Melanie Smith (1,600) and Jelly Nolden (200).

It was a quiet day for Nikiski, which won the boys 400 relay. For the Bulldogs, it was the second time they stepped on a track this season.

Most of the team's practice has been in the gym, on bicycle paths and in parking lots, coach Dan Adair said, because there is 2 feet of snow on the school's track.

"It makes it tough," he said. "But as a whole group, these kids just have a great attitude. They are a lot of fun to work with, hang out with. They are supportive of each other. That's just a pleasure as a coach."
