United Way seeks volunteers

The Kenai Peninsula United Way is currently seeking volunteers that would be interested in dedicating one day of their time toward the upcoming allocations review process on May 4 at the Borough Building in Soldotna.

The Allocations Review Process is the annual evaluation for distribution of funds toward the 27 area United Way agencies.

Draft budget work sessions held today

The Kenai City Council will hold work sessions to review the FY 2000-2001 draft budget today at 7 p.m. in the council chambers. The session is open to the public. A copy of the draft budget is available for review in the city clerk's office in Kenai.

Training for 'certified installer' to be offered

The Mining and Petroleum Training Service in conjunction with the state of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation will provide training for certified installers. The cost is $65.

The program is designed to train and certify persons for proper installation of conventional on-site domestic waste water disposal systems. Training consists on a four-hour lecture followed by a written examination, which is required for certification. Lecture attendance is mandatory to take the exam.

Basketball game fund-raiser set for June 10

The Kenai Elks Lodge No. 2425 has begun preparations for its third annual NFL Celebrity All-Star Basketball game. The drive this year is to assist with providing funds toward the purchase of a volunteer vehicle for Kenai Peninsula veterans. The game will be held June 10.

Alaska Housing seminar planned

Alaska Housing Finance Corp. will offer an eight-hour home buyer education seminar May 1 and 2 at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Building, room B, in Soldotna.

The seminar will be from 6 to 10 p.m. each night and will feature experts speaking on such topics as: getting started with a budget, shopping for a lender and a real estate agent, shopping for a home, inspecting a home and maintaining a home. The mortgage loan and closing, energy efficiency standards and AHFC programs also will be covered.

Those attending may be able to save up to $250 on AHFC's fees and be eligible for a discount on FHA's mortgage insurance.
