For those living north of the city of Kenai, getting a new hairstyle or a pedicure no longer requires a drive all the way into town.

Nikiski Hair, Nails & Supply is open right on the Kenai Spur Highway, to cater to North Kenai residents.

"Nikiski doesn't have anything like it," said co-owner and hair stylist Lois Macy. "Everybody's used to going into town, and they forget that we're here."

Located next door to Nikiski Building Supply, the new business has been open since Feb. 1, and Macy said business has been steadily growing.

"For a new business, it's doing really well," she said.

The salon offers cosmetics for women's and men's hair, nail designs and supplies for those who want to do their own upkeep and maintenance.

Macy's partner, and co-owner, Kathy Newstead does nails.

"She does silk, fiberglass and acrylic," Macy said. "And she does spa manicures and three types of pedicures."

Macy said Newstead also offers paraffin dips, a process of dipping the hands in a warm wax-type substance and letting the hands sit in rubber gloves until they dry.

"You let the paraffin sit on hands," she said. "And when you take it off, your skin feels like silk."

Macy emphasized that she does not only style and cut women's hair, and she said she's become flexible for men who may not have their hair cut on any set schedule.

"I take walk-ins," she said. "Some men won't make appointments."

Macy said for those needing supplies, there is little problem getting what people may want.

"We do special orders," she said, "if there is something you want and we don't have (it)."
