Alaska PTA celebrating 50 years

Posted: Wednesday, April 18, 2007

The Alaska Parent Teacher Association is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The National PTA chartered the Alaska PTA on April 24, 1957. The Legislature honored Alaska PTA for 50 years of dedicated service on behalf of Alaska’s children.

Of the 40 founding PTAs who formed Alaska PTA in 1957, five were located on the Kenai Peninsula: Anchor Point, Moose Pass, Seward, Ninilchik and Homer. Currently there are 14 PTAs or PTSAs on the peninsula: Homer High, Hope, Kalifornsky Beach, Mountain View, Nikiski Middle-High, Nikiski North Star, Paul Banks, Redoubt, Sears, Seward, Soldotna Elementary, Soldotna High, Soldotna Middle and Sterling. In addition, Kaleidoscope has applied for a local unit charter.

On April 26, 27 and 28, the State PTA will hold its annual convention in Anchorage at the Sheraton Hotel. The theme of the conference is Family Wellness and Happy Birthday to PTA. The public is welcome to attend. The conference begins with round table discussions, including presentations by PTAs from around the state who will share projects they have done at their local schools to promote improved nutrition and physical activity for children.

On April 27 there are a variety of workshops, some relating specifically to PTA, others that would appeal to a more general audience followed in the evening by a birthday celebration.

April 28 starts out bright and early with a Walk for Healthy Children. More workshops are scheduled, including one focusing on Internet safety presented by Alaska law enforcement officials in charge of crimes against children. Also scheduled is a keynote presentation by Jill Fleming, a registered dietitian and member of the National Speaker’s Association of Wisconsin. In addition to workshops, speakers, and vendors, a Commemorative Pictorial Postmark will be available on Saturday. Anyone wishing to have mail stamped with the State PTA pictorial postmark need only bring a letter or postcard affixed with a first class postage to the station at the Sheraton on April 28.

Joining the group at the state convention will be Jan Harp Domene, the National PTA president-elect.
