Don't pitch it; recycle it

I am writing to start some discussion about what I consider to be a substantial "dirty secret" in this town.

Where can you go to find any number of construction materials, gently used furniture, windows, TVs, bags of usable clothing, appliances all for free? The Soldotna Landfill CD Cell. This is where the non household garbage goes at the dump. It is a recyclers paradise! Only you're not technically allowed to salvage.

Our homesteader parents and grandparents would be ashamed of all this wastefulness. There is talk of building a new mall in Soldotna where a plethora of brand new merchandise would be available all year round. I feel we should be doing a better job of reclaiming the usable items that pass many of us by on a daily basis, before building a large building and the parking to accommodate it. What happens when the cost of building materials goes through the roof and we've buried a communities worth of supplies under an ever growing mountain. Maybe we'll put some ski lifts on it and make some revenue!

Or maybe we should provide a space where usable stuff can be reclaimed by the community. Craigslist and Kenai Peninsula Freecycle on Yahoo groups are two valuable tools for getting rid of unwanted supplies. Remember, one man's trash is another's treasure.
