What Literacy Means To Me

Posted: Thursday, April 19, 2001

Literacy means a lot to me because if I didn't know how to read or write, I wouldn't be able to do some of the things that I love doing like writing letter or reading Nancy Drew books. I love mystery and romance stories. Writing letters to my sister in Tacoma is like a hobby.

I would hate waking up and realizing that I couldn't read or write. It would be like someone was ripping a part of my life away from me. It would be painful and I don't think that I could live. Reading and writing to me is like breathing and eating. I need to read and write just as I need to breath.

I also wouldn't be able to help with my mom's business. Helping my mom is pretty fun. She lets me make out all the tickets and do the math. I have to know how to read and write to be able to do that.

In 5th grade, my teacher had me help a boy that had trouble with literate subjects. We were always writing stories and essays, so I was always helping this boy. He was confused a lot and the teacher seemed to not like helping him and made it my job. I felt sorry for him because people were constantly making fun of him and calling him stupid.

Well, you can probably see why literacy is important to me. I am glad that I have the opportunity to read and write. I am also glad that people took the time to teach me. Thank you.
