The following list of Soldotna Community Schools classes and activities beginning this week is printed as a reminded to preregistered participants. Anyone interested in a class or activity should call the Community Schools office at 262-6768.
Spring Fishing with Dave Atcheson, author of "Fishing Alaska's Kenai Peninsula" This class will cover fresh water, spring fishing options, techniques, equipment selection for both fly fishers and spin casters and information on where to go. The class is open to all ages and meets from 8 to 9 p.m. in Soldotna Middle School room 6. The cost is $10.
First Aid with Diane M. Campbell, EMS trainer and Funny River Safety LLC This Coast Guard-approved class is taught according to American Safety and Health Institute standards. It is open to teens and adults with a six-person minimum and 10-person maximum. It will meet from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the SMS library. The cost is $45.
Common Insects and Diseases of Trees This class will highlight the common insects and diseases affecting trees in Southcentral Alaska, including spruce bark beetles, birch aphids, leaf rollers and heart rot. Participants will learn how to recognize insects and diseases and what can be done to prevent them from becoming established in trees. The class is open to teens and adults and will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. in SMS room 25. The cost is $10.

Over the Hill Basketball Canceled last week, the activity resumes this week.
CPR-First Aid The class will be offered at Homer High School for $90. Register by calling Homer Community Schools.
Sea Kayaking 101 with Alison of True North Kayaking Adventures This is an introductory class to begin to enjoy the sport of sea kayaking. The class will include a pool session, where basic strokes and wet exit and re-entry techniques will be covered, followed by a field trip across Kachemak Bay. Participants must register by April 26. The class will meet from 8 to 10 p.m. April 30 at the Homer High pool and from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 1 for the field trip. The cost is $135 for the water taxi, pool and kayak rental, plus a $15 Community Schools fee.
Safe Kids Fair, Bike Rodeo and Water Safety This event is dedicated to childhood injury prevention. Information will be available about specific injury prevention techniques and emergency response. Bike helmets are mandatory to participate in the bike rodeo, which will be from 10 a.m. to noon May 1. After the bike rodeo, they will be for sale in the Homer High School Commons. The water safety program is in the Homer High swimming pool.
