ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A woman committed suicide Wednesday by jumping from the 18th floor of the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage.

Michelle Francisco, 27, died at the scene, Anchorage police said.

The woman jumped from a balcony shortly after 9 a.m.

Hotel maids had talked to the woman before she jumped when she asked to be let into a room to use the bathroom, police said. The maids told Francisco that she would have to use the public bathrooms on the first floor.

The woman jumped from a common area that leads through an unlocked door to a balcony.
