Writers workshop scheduled with author

Homer Council on the Arts will hold a two-day writers workshop Monday and Tuesday with guest author Tom Miller. Participants must preregister and submit two to four pages of nonfiction writing. The cost is $40, with a $5 discount for council members.

Miller also will do a public reading April 22 at 7 p.m. at the homer Public Library. The event is free; refreshments will be served.

Shorebird photo contest planned in May

The Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival is May 4-7. In conjunction with that event, an amateur photo contest will be held. Categories include Alaska wildlife, outdoor sports, scenery and commercial fishing. Prizes will be awarded in each category, plus there will be a grand prize and best of show.

Entries are due May 1. They will be displayed May 4 through 14 at NOMAR.

Short story, poetry contest seeks entries

A total of $1,700 in prizes will be awarded to the winning short story and poetry entries by "Explorations 2000," the University of Alaska Southeast literary magazine. Submissions are due May 15.
