Unruly passengers prompt United flight to divert to Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A pair of unruly passengers is blamed for causing a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Shanghai to divert here late Thursday.

Witnesses said a couple of women in their 20s got into a fight on the flight after several hours of screaming and yelling. One of them had to be restrained.

The Boeing 747 jumbo jet had almost reached the International Date Line when the fight broke out, passengers said.

The women were taken into custody after the plane landed in Anchorage, just before 10 p.m. (ADT). Its more than 200 passengers were given hotel vouchers.

Flight 857 was to resume Friday, after its crew gets a mandatory 18 hours of rest. The FBI was called in to investigate.
