Please, no more 'sin taxes'

Posted: Tuesday, April 20, 2004

Not another "sin tax" on cigarettes! Why are these governor's friends singling out certain groups of people (smokers, drinkers, tourists) to impose extra tax burdens on?

Get rid of them all. Build that Knik Arm bridge. Insert a toll booth. Charge $5 per tire on any vehicle that uses the "sinners shortcut" to the Kenai Peninsula.

Now there's a hot idea for billions of extra bucks, plus it puts a few people to work.

Show me a politician-lawmaker, anybody, who will stand up and back off of these "sin taxes," and I'll vote for him or her. And I'd vote "yes" to a proposal to use the permanent fund for the government any way they see fit.
