Three years ago parent committee chair Shanda Hall came with an idea to raise funds for the Soldotna Boys & Girls Club inspired by the game show "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader". This year the Are You Smarter Than Our Kids annual event was totally LOL (laugh out loud) hilarious thanks to adult contestants Michelle Glaves, Norm Blakely, Ryan Marquis, Joe Gallagher, and Mike Navarre and their kid partners Grace Mills, Juanita Rincon, Mckenna Foster, Brenna Belluomini, and Andrea Rodriguez.
In the end after all the Paccuci extra credit antics, it was Soldotna Chamber of Commerce director Michelle Glaves and her youth teammate Grace Mills who went home with the kid-made trophy and bragging rights. "It's an amazing trophy made by the kids at the club from paper towel roll centers with glitter and feathers. It's gorgeous and I hope everyone stops by and sees it at the Soldotna Visitor's Center so I can brag a lot," proclaimed the new champion. Glaves and Mills won after wagering all their points in the bonus round and correctly answering "Germany" to the question: The tradition of the Easter Bunny hiding colored eggs came from which country? But not without the help and generosity of two of their lifeline tables.
Second place went to Norm Blakely and Juanita Rincon. "This year the audience and lifeline table sponsors were quite amused at the antics of Dan Pascucci as he played the persona of Extra Curricular Activities leader complete with Coach's uniform and bullhorn. He led the contestants and lifeline sponsors through extra credit mission assignments that displayed on the screen like a secret agent mission, and double dog dares, one of which resulted in Norm Blakely singing Home on the Range to the entire audience," said Shanda Hall. The evening was packed with good natured competition, as the audience members tried to convince the Game Show Host, Peter Micciche, to let them buy points for contestants who had only partially answered a question correctly. He did allow it, and the audience stepped up, but Glaves still ended up winning with all the funds, over $15,000 going to help support the Soldotna Boys & Girls Club.
The evening also featured a silent auction and a Restaurant Taste Tour buffet dinner with dishes from 11 different local establishments. Volunteers who made the evening possible included Febra Hensley, Camille Sorenson, Allison Gottesman, Rebecca Matthews and Soldotna Club director Kim Lee. "All of us would like to thank all the Lifeline Sponsor Tables, Restaurants and businesses that helped make this event so successful and entertaining for all," added Hall.
