Anchorage man dies in Bird Ridge avalanche

Posted: Wednesday, April 20, 2011

A 41-year-old Anchorage man was killed in an avalanche off of Bird Ridge Trail. The body of Dale Brabec was recovered by Alaska State Troopers' helicopter at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Brabec went out alone Monday to spend the afternoon hiking and sledding down chutes along Bird Ridge Trail. Friends became concerned when he didn't show up for work Tuesday morning, leading them to his car parked at the Bird Ridge Trailhead. Troopers received the report that Brabec was missing at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and launched the helicopter with an Alaska State Trooper and Alaska Rescue Mountain Group member as spotters. Brabec's metal saucer-type sled was spotted from the air, leading to the discovery of his body.

The helicopter landed atop of the ridge, allowing the AMRG member and two friends who were on the trail searching for Brabec to hike to his body. His remains will be transported to State Medical Examiner's office.

All searchers made it off the mountain safely.
