JUNEAU (AP) -- An injured Ketchikan sailor and his dog were rescued by the Coast Guard Wednesday about 30 miles south of his hometown.

Thomas Moore broke his arm Monday when he fell during a hunting trip on Revillagigedo Island, the Coast Guard reported. He got back on his 27-foot sailboat and was drifting when an Alaska State Trooper aircraft flew over on Wednesday.

Moore was able to launch three red flares, and the pilot contacted Moore on the radio and learned of the problem.

The Coast Guard cutter Orcas, sailing nearby, was diverted to assist.

A medic crew stabilized Moore's arm and Coast Guard rescue craft from Ketchikan brought him, his dog, and his boat back to Ketchikan.

Moore was taken to Ketchikan General Hospital for treatment.
