ANCHORAGE (AP) A 4-year-old girl died Sunday morning in an apartment fire in Anchorage, a fire official said.
Firefighters were called to a 12-plex in the Mountain View neighborhood shortly after 8 a.m., said Tom Kempton of the Anchorage Fire Department.
The first crews to arrive reported flames coming from the windows of a second floor unit. The crews also said several residents were attempting to escape the blaze.
Firefighters were able to enter the apartment and rescue residents, including the 4-year-old and her mother. Both were taken to Alaska Regional Hospital where the girl was pronounced dead. The mother was treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.
The Red Cross has provided housing for the displaced residents.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, although it is believed the fire began in a mattress.
