K-Beach students enjoy Homer performer in school

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary recently completed its sixth year of participating in the Artist in Schools Program. This year's artist was Eddie Wood from Homer.

He is a professional performer. The residency was four weeks, from Feb. 23 to March 19. Eddie worked with our primary students. The children learned about instruments from all over the world, played them and worked on movement to stories with music.

The program was a success thanks to our specials teachers, Mrs. Bagley, Mr. Houghlum and Mrs. Clark. Their scheduling expertise was invaluable. And Mrs. Bagley also generously gave us gym time for rehearsal, and thanks to Mr. Houghlum for the use of equipment.

Our community also contributed to the success. Thanks to the Senn Family for providing housing for Mr. Wood; the Short Stop was most kind in donating lunches for our artist; and the Musgrove family donated a gift certificate to The Duck Inn.

We appreciate the participation and financial support from the parents and the Kalifornsky Beach PTA.

Our staff at Kalifornsky Beach surprised the students with a performance at the end of the program.

Artist in the Schools is a program of the Alaska State Council on the Arts, with support from the Alaska State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
