Community Schools

This is a list of classes/activities that begin this week, to serve as a reminder to registered participants. If you are interested in a class or activity but are not preregistered, please call the Soldotna Community School office to check on space availability, location changes and cancellations.

Soldotna Community School Brochures have been mailed to the 99669 zip code boxholders, general delivery and city routes. Extra brochures are available at the Soldotna and Kenai Public Library and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.

Note: Children are not allowed to wait unattended while a parent attends a class or to attend an adult class.


Introduction to the Kenai River with Joe McCullough and Bill Berkhahn, Alaska State Park Rangers. Topics will include rules and etiquette of boating on the Kenai River, biology of the river, cold water survival, understanding the regulations, safety on the river and an introduction to the Kenai River Center. For more information contact rangers Joe or Bill at 262-5581. Part two of two, all ages, five-person minimum, 6 to 8 p.m., Kenai River Center conference room, no fee.


Basic Kayaking with Jim Bennett. Learn basic kayaking techniques for both sea and white water kayaks, including paddle strokes, wet exits and reentry, Eskimo roll, self-rescue, rescue techniques, trip preparation, kayak selection, clothing, gear and place to kayak. Come prepared to get into the pool. If you bring a kayak, clean it inside and out before the class. Personal flotation device recommended. Two weeks, high school and adults, five-person minimum, 7 to 9 p.m., Skyview High School pool, $20.

Elementary Spanish with Eva Canedo. Learn to speak and understand Spanish from a native. The class will cover basic fundamentals such as grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading and an emphasis on learning intuitively through unique activities, games and stories. Cultural insights and natural accents. Four weeks, all ages, ten-person minimum, 25-person maximum, 6 to 7:15 p.m., Soldotna Middle School, room 1, $40 ages 7 to 18, $60 adults.

CPR with Diane M. Campbell, EMS Trainer and Funny River Safety LLC. This class is taught according to American Heart Association Heartsaver standards. One night, adults, six-person minimum, 12-person maximum, adult CPR 6:30 to 8 p.m., child and infant CPR to to 10 p.m., Soldotna Middle School, room 8, $40.


First Aid with Diane M. Campbell, EMS Trainer and Funny River Safety LLC. This Coast Guard-approved class is taught according to American Safety and Health Institute standards. One night, teens and adults, six-person minimum, 10-person maximum, 6:30 to 10 p.m., Soldotna Middle School, room 8, $20.
