Woman found in Gastineau Channel

JUNEAU (AP) -- Police are investigating the death of an unidentified woman whose body was found floating in Gastineau Channel near Marine Park Sunday.

An autopsy was planned for the remains of the woman who had shoulder-length brown hair and wore blue jeans and a blue jacket.

Juneau police received a report of the body in the water near the downtown parking garage at 7:45 a.m. Sunday. It's not known how long the body was in the water.

The cause of death was not known and it's not known if there was any foul play involved.

The area is close to many downtown bars, which close at 3 a.m. on weekends, and a portion of the shoreline is used as a camp by some homeless people.
