DENALI NATIONAL PARK (AP) -- The Denali Park Road has been opened to private traffic as far as the Teklanika rest stop at Mile 30.
The road was opened Saturday and will remain open to Teklanika, weather permitting, until tour buses begin running in mid-May.
More than 30 tour buses a day will be driving in and out of the park, each loaded with camera-toting tourists hoping to get a picture of a wolf or a grizzly bear or Mount McKinley.
Crews began clearing the park road a month ago. They rip apart small glaciers with giant teeth attached to the back of a bulldozer and plow through 15-foot drifts that are as hard as concrete.
Crews expect to have the road open to Wonder Lake, 82 miles into the park, in about a month. The first bus is scheduled to drive to Wonder Lake on June 8.
