Kenai teen receives statewide recognition
Crystal Morris has been named Alaska's State Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls Club.
She recently traveled to Anchorage to compete against four other club youths. She was awarded $5,000 total for being named Kenai Peninsula winner and now the state winner. As the state winner, Morris will travel to California this summer and compete against five other state winners for the Pacific Region title.
Kenai woman attends special event
Candi Stewart of Kenai was part of the 28th annual Spring Sing Gala at Harding University recently. The all-student revue was an event of the annual Youth Forum when more that 2,000 teens from across the nation gather for a full schedule of events.
Spring Sing is a musical showcase for campus guests. The shows are judged for originality, costume, choreography and music.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Stewart of Kenai.
Students excel in efforts
Isaac Dale achieved a high grade point average and was named to the quarterly dean's list at University of Washington. He is the son of Karen Hummel of Soldotna.
Jerod Kaufman of Kenai was one of seven team members from Western Kentucky University who won at a recent competition. The group of engineering students finished first and third at the Ohio Valley regional competition where their low-profile, three-dimensional truss bridge, built and designed by the team, competed and won against entries from Ohio State, Kentucky and Dayton universities.
Bridges were judged on aesthetics, stiffness, construction speed, weight, construction economy, structural efficiency and overall performance. The bridges are required to be 23-feet long with a 13-foot span, 2-feet high with a 1 1/2-foot clearance and 3 1/2-feet wide and able to support 2,500 pounds.
Nikiski man enlists in Army
Christofer J. Bauer has enlisted in the U.S. Army as a cavalry scout. He recently left for basic training at Fort Knox, Ky.
His is the son of Joan Bauer of Nikiski and Mike Bauer of Anchorage.
