ANCHORAGE(AP) -- A weekend storm dumped more than four feet of snow at Hatcher Pass, closing the road through the pass.
The snowfall, totalling about 56 inches on the east side of the recreation area, caused three avalanches.
The avalanches slid across Hatcher Pass Road. One just uphill from the Motherlode Lodge buried an 800-foot stretch of road 25 feet deep, said Kurt Devon, state Transportation Department maintenance superintendent.
Two smaller slides buried stretches of road farther north toward Independence Mine. Devon estimated it would take crews two days to clear the road.
No one was hurt in the slides, Devon said.
