His paintings hang in some of the most beautiful homes in Alaska, the book he wrote on plants of the Kenai Peninsula is used as a text for Alaskan Botany classes, and his knowledge of birds is locally unsurpassed. He was a former employee of Walt Disney, and he's a friend of anyone with an inquisitive mind.
It was very evident at the retirement party held in his honor recently at Kenai Peninsula College where he had become an institution as a Professor, that Boyd Shaffer and his wife Susan are going to be sorely missed. "Let me say this, I'm going to miss you as much as you miss me, and undoubtedly more, but I have a group of people waiting for me to work with in Belize to start investigating plants and birds in the rain forest," said Shaffer who plans on staying in the area until September. Shaffer will have one final plant identification class, which will begin the first of July and continue through August. Additionally, Shaffer said he plans to stay in touch with everyone in Alaska through his website.
