Finance Committee OKs raise in car registration

JUNEAU (AP) -- A bill boosting car license fees cleared the House Finance Committee on Tuesday.

House Bill 170 would boost car and truck registration fees to $50 a year. Currently car registration fees are $34 a year, and pickup fees are $39.

Fees for motorcycles, taxis and other vehicles would also rise under the measure, which would raise about $12 million dollars a year.

The bill is part of a $113 million package of tax and fee bills Gov. Frank Murkowski introduced this year aimed at narrowing the gap between spending and revenue.

The bill now goes to the Rules Committee, which schedules bills for floor votes.
