REGINA, Saskatchewan (AP) The four nominees for new leader of the Anglican Church of Canada, announced by the nation's bishops Sunday, include a woman, Bishop Victoria Matthews of Edmonton, Alberta.
The other nominees are Bishop Ronald Ferris of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; Bishop Andrew Hutchison of Montreal; and Bishop Caleb Lawrence of Schumacher, Ontario.
If elected by a national synod May 31, Matthews, 49, would be the first female to head any of the 38 branches in the international Anglican Communion. She was her denomination's first woman bishop and is the only one to head a diocese.
