Performances enriched by those who lead them

Last week I attended two incredible events at KCHS Renee C. Henderson Auditorium. I am again reminded and thankful of the extraordinary opportunities provided to students in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. A captivating audience at both events eagerly waited to celebrate each presentations with standing ovations.

Phil Morin is a gift to this community. Time after time, his productions make you feel as though you are in New York City attending a first-class Broadway show. You watch spellbound enjoying his most recent performance thinking this is the best one he has ever done only to be upscaled by the next one. I had great emotion as I watched the Nikiski High School dance concert that night knowing it was Phil’s last production. Walking out of the auditorium that evening I just wished it would have never had to end.

Phil, Chris, Paul and Michael, you are a class act family that has given so much to this community. Thank you so much. Your shoes will be hard to fill.

I share an equal attitude of gratitude with Renee Henderson. I have had four sons attend KCHS. What a great school in so many ways it has been and continues to be for them. However, some of the most lasting and lifetime memories of high school will be those from choral trips Ms. Henderson has made possible. She has installed in her students the love of music and travel and the vision to visit and even become meaningful members of other cultures in the world. It is because of Renee that my sons have no more difficulty traveling to Ecuador than Anchorage.

As I enjoyed the European concert the students proudly shared with their friends and families, I kept thinking these are Kenai students from Alaska. Wow! You could have easily assumed you were seeing and listening to a professional choral group. Renee, sees the potential in each of her students and takes them to levels they never even knew were possible. Ms. Henderson you are one in a million and one of a kind.

My family and the Kenai Peninsula have been richly blessed by the talents and gifts of Phil and Renee. To each of you, thank you for sharing your best with your students.
