Longtime Kenai resident, Mr. Ernest T. Kandas, 75, died Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Heritage Place in Soldotna.
A memorial Mass will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai.
Mr. Kandas was born Jan. 15, 1935, in Chicago. He received his diploma from Saint Patrick's High School in Chicago. He joined the United States Air Force and served for 20 years until he retired in 1974. He received the highest rank as a senior sergeant and was the chief controller for air traffic control. In 1978 he moved to Kenai. Prior to moving to Kenai he was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage from 1972-73. In Montana he was a Veterans Affairs Division Officer. In 1978 he retired from Veterans Affairs. Ernest was a member of the Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Kenai. He helped many veterans and their dependants with eligibility for benefits. Ernest loved fishing with his friends.
"Ernie's spirited character will be missed by all who knew him. He helped many friends in need and was also an advocate for veterans with disabilities," his family said.
Mr. Kandas is survived by his sons, Michael Kandas of Billings, Mont., Wayne Kandas of Gilbert, Ariz., Daniel Kandas of Bluefield, W.V., and Ronald Kandas of Soldotna; and daughter, Janet Anderson of Queen Creek, Ariz.
