Young coming to Soldotna

The Greater Soldotna Chamber of Commerce weekly luncheon Tuesday will feature Rep. Don Young as guest speaker. The luncheon meets at the Riverside House at noon.

The Friends of the Kenai Community Library is accepting donations of books, magazines and other items for its annual book sale.

Teleconference will aid grieving children

The annual Hospice Foundation of America's Living with Grief Satellite Teleconference will be Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This year's conference will focus on helping children and adolescents cope with loss, grief and bereavement. The program will offer insight and practical suggestions for those assisting young people dealing with death, serious illness, divorce and other traumas.

Wednesday is the deadline for registration because space is limited. The conference fee is $20.

Hospice of the Central Peninsula sponsors the site in Soldotna at the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Media Center in Soldotna. For registration or more information, call Sue Bezilla, bereavement coordinator at hospice, at 262-0453.

Kindergarten preparedness meeting planned

Sears Elementary will present a meeting "Making the Transition: Preparing your child for kindergarten" Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Kenai Cooperative Preschool. The meeting is open to the public and geared toward parents or guardians with children entering kindergarten or preschool age.

Daughters to work luncheon scheduled

Aviation is the theme of the Take Our Daughters to Work luncheon Thursday at noon at the Riverside House sponsored by Girl Scouts of America. Guest speakers include Pam French, a helicopter pilot for Alaska Army National Guard, and Paige Lewis, a pilot for Era Aviation. The cost is $10 per person.

Kenai council to hold work sessions

The Kenai City Council will hold work sessions to review the fiscal year 2000-01 draft budget Thursday and May 2 at 7 p.m. at city hall. The sessions are open to the public. Copies of the draft budget are available for review at city hall on Fidalgo Avenue in Kenai.

United Way meeting scheduled

The Kenai Peninsula United Way will hold a meeting Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Homer Electric Association in Kenai. The meeting is open to the public.

Nikiski community blood drive

Blood Bank of Alaska's Kenai Peninsula Center, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will have a community blood drive Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Nikiski Church of the Nazarene, across from the Nikiski Fire Station No. 1. Drink lots of caffeine-free liquids and eat a good meal before donating. The donation will help three Alaskans.

Track, field meet coming to Homer

The Hershey's Track and Field Meet will be Saturday at the Homer High School track.

Registration starts at 1 p.m.; the meet starts at 2 p.m. People can preregister at the Homer Community School office in the high school. This playground-style track and field meet is a fun and low-key event with a focus on participation. It's free.
