JUNEAU (AP) -- Sponsors of an initiative that would implement a statewide head tax on cruise ship passengers visiting Alaska filed their petition last week with the state Division of Elections.
Although it originally called for a $75-a-person head tax, Juneau resident Joe Geldhoff said the group felt the initiative stood a better chance at $50 a head.
Sponsors also added a new provision that would require the ships to apply for state wastewater discharge permits.
Under the initiative, the state would claim a third of all on-board gambling proceeds.
