Shane Matthew Hawkins of Kenai died Monday, April 22, 2002, of bone cancer at Central Peninsula General Hospital, the same hospital in which he was born. He was 26.

A memorial service and a celebration of Mr. Hawkins' life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Skyview High School and will include a community potluck. For more information about the potluck, call 262-7016 or 260-3749.

A viewing will take place at 1 p.m. April 30 at New Life Assembly of God Church in Kenai, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. and a procession to Spruce Grove Memorial Park cemetery in Kasilof for the burial.

Mr. Hawkins was born Dec. 2, 1975, in Soldotna. He graduated from Skyview in 1994 as a member of the National Honor Society. He worked for Sears as an appliance technician until he was diagnosed with cancer and began treatment in Seattle at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Mr. Hawkins served in the community as an active youth leader and member of the Soldotna Church of God. He also supported the American Cancer Society through fund-raising for the Relay for Life. He spent much of his spare time skiing, camping, riding motorcycles and studying automotive trends. He also spent time sharing morning chats over coffee with family and friends.

"Shane was a very special man who believed with his whole heart that we, as Christians, should live the Word rather than preach it. The Lord blessed him with watching his son grow into a wonderful 'little man' of nearly 3 years old. We are thankful for the special gift from God that Shane was to us," his family said.

Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Sarah Hawkins; son, Jonathan; parents, Dale and Cheryl Hawkins; sister, Chandra Hawkins; grandparents, Alex and Bea Kunkler and Bruce Hawkins; and numerous relatives scattered throughout the states.

Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by his sister, Pamela Gene Hawkins, and grandmother, Charlene Hawkins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shane Hawkins Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank, 44552 Sterling Highway, Soldotna, AK 99669.
