ANCHORAGE (AP) An Alaska dog won second place in the Kibbles 'n Bits Dog Hero of the Year Award, the dog food company announced Wednesday.

The dog, Shadow, chased a grizzly sow and cub away from owner Don Mobley near Skwentna in August.

The sow was nearly upon Mobley after he got between it and its cub when Shadow came out of the trees and lunged at the bear, Mobley said.

The 3-year-old German shepherd mix chased the pair away and came out with minimal injuries.

Shadow was awarded $200 and a certificate of merit.

The top award went to a New York golden retriever named Bullet, who saved a 20-day-old infant by barking when the child stopped breathing.
