Rachel Besse, a 2003 graduate of Soldotna High School, finished off her career at Vanguard University of Southern California as a four-time all-Golden State Athletic Conference center and a three-time National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-American. Besse was a honorable mention on the NAIA All-American team as a sophomore, a second-team selection as a junior and a third-team selection as a senior.
This season, Vanguard made the third trip in school history to the semifinal round of the NAIA Division I tournament in Jackson, Tenn. In the first game of the tournament, Besse had 26 points and 10 rebounds in a 74-64 victory over Harris-Stowe State University (Missouri). Vanguard lost in the semifinals of the tournament to Cumberland University (Tennessee) to finish the season with a 31-1 record.
Besse finished her career with 1,615 points, 979 rebounds and a school-record 234 blocks. Besse will graduate in May with a degree in sociology.
