NOME (AP) -- A 34-year-old Nome man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a woman last year.

Ben Noyakuk was found guilty Monday of killing 29-year-old Martha Butler in March 2001.

Butler's body was found about 10 miles outside of town in mid-April after authorities received a tip. Investigators said she had been shot in the head at close range with a shotgun.

According to prosecutors, the two had been living together and had a history of domestic violence. They said Noyakuk killed Butler and took her body to the Penny River, where he buried her in the snow.

Noyakuk's sentencing is scheduled for July 22.
